The Milwaukee neighborhood ofBay Viewhas been slowly evolving into a vibrant mix where the old meets the new. Driving down Kinnickinnick, the typical building is a brick two-story with a storefront below and an apartment above.The Avalon Theateropened in 1929 andis one of many well-preserved neighborhood charms.In 2019, a few blocks north sat 347 Ward Street, a family-owned book bindery with less curb appeal than a blank piece of paper. When the new owner purchased the building, they aimed to create a unique space for writers, typographers, and printmakers by modernizing the space while still focusing on preserving the building's history.GCA developed a functional space with historical objects and equipment exhibited throughout. The reimagined courtyard entrance features orange corten steel, complementing the almost passport blue brick façade. During the last renovation in 1973, theowner blocked up thelargefront windows. Thenewdesign returned the original intent with a modern take by completely opening them up and framing the windows with black steel.An eye-catching neon sign provides an almost retro finishing touch. This space now perfectly embodies the neighborhood it resides in, a beautiful blend of the old and the new. Inside and out the delicate frame of a restored steel structure maintains the original beauty of two historic greenhouses on the north end of Dubuque. The original design for growing plants was transformed into an urban farm and a space for community. Bonding over a shared universal interest in food and improving the lives of others is the vision of Convivium Urban Farmstead. The outdoor courtyard and interior café, training kitchen, woodshop, and event center celebrate and give back to locals.

Residential Architect Project | Cottage Commons | GCA https://www.galbraithcarnahan.comCottage Commons in Brookfield aimed to create a human centric, highly walkable community. We created a master plan following the major principles of Pocket Neighborhood design, which emphasizes shared community amenities, clusters of units visually connected to those shared spaces, and limited traffic. Cottage Commons would have utilized a cozy "cottage" aesthetic for unit exteriors.
